The Women's Public Links Golf Association (WPLGA) is one of the four women's organizations in Southern California and recognized by the United States Golf Association (USGA) to provide handicap services and golf course ratings.
When WPLGA was established in 1933 it had thirteen member clubs, some of which were public but have since become private clubs. In 1942 Defense Stamps were given for tournament prizes and during that year, due to government regulations a member had to turn in an old golf ball upon receipt of a new one. In 1944, annual dues were fifty cents and, in 1945 if you won three out of five events, you won a pair of argyle socks. In 1944 the first "away-from-home-tournament" was held at the Pomona Valley Golf Club and dues were increased to $1.
The Association has grown considerably since 1933 and is still growing. In 1992, we were launched into the computer age with handicap posting. All member clubs are "on line" with the Electronic Handicap System (EHS).
WPLGA sponsors monthly "Association Days" offering a choice of nine to ten golf courses to play varying tournament formats. This allows a member to play a course close to home, try a new course, or play an old favorite somewhere in Southern Califonria.
WPLGA also sponsors seven "major tournaments" each year. Some are one-day events while others cover a period of two to three days away from home. Further information is provided in the Official WPLGA Handbook.
A "Far-Away-From-Home" (FAFH) tournament is an annual event hosted by the WPLGA. This is a seven-day event held in a different place each year (i.e., Victoria, BC, Disney World in Florida, Hawaii, New York, New England and the Dominican Republic). The site selected for 2005 is Hilton Hawaiian Village, Waikiki, Hawaii.
A popular event sponsored by the WPLGA is the annual team play in March and April. This is a partner's better ball, match play, inter-club competition.
